Tiny & Tasty: Dish Works Launches ‘Cooking on a Dime’ Social Media Show

Talk with us for more than two minutes, and chances are we’ll start singing the praises of the Dish Works culinary team. This crew of incredibly hardworking, creative, focused professionals brings an unbelievable wealth of talent and knowledge to our process.

Nearly every single video and photo that we capture for our clients includes the culinary team’s handiwork. Because we almost never use fake food in our content, each and every dish is made in-house by this group. Our extensive range of clients means that, on any given day, the culinary team might be cooking a huge pan of paella, frosting bakery-ready layer cakes, rolling out pasta dough for scratch-made spaghetti, and developing recipes for a kids’ magazine. Our culinary team loves to have fun — see our TikTok page for proof — but they never shy away from a challenge.

And that’s why we knew they’d be on board for a wacky idea that we’ve dreamed up: “Cooking on a Dime.” This is our new, just-for-social-media cooking show that asks our culinary team to make a dish around a specific theme. Sounds simple, right? The thing is: The dish has to fit on a literal dime, just 0.705 inches in diameter.

This ridiculous — but also, kind of genius? — idea originated with a late-night text. A few of the Dish Works team members were in a group chat, when someone dropped this gem right into our laps:

Because we know a great concept when we see one, and because we love to encourage our team to bring creativity in all its many forms to the workplace, we gave it the green light.

We dubbed this project “Cooking on a Dime” and pitched it to the culinary team. Of course they were game, and we shot the first episode soon after. Yes, we also came up with an original theme song!

In the first installment, the chefs truly wowed us with their tiny and beautifully composed dishes: a southern BBQ bowl; a chicken caprese stack; a pulled pork sando with a homemade miniature bun; a seared steak salad; and a classic grilled cheese.

The next episode was all about breakfast, with equally stunning results. Our chefs tackled the challenge with aplomb, producing teeny stacks of pancakes, bananas foster French toast and a very petite breakfast sandwich! There is a winner for each episode (the judges panel is made up of other Dish Works team members). The winner walks away with a little spending money.

Everyone on our team has had a lot of fun with this, and more installments of “Cooking on a Dime” are coming soon — the third episode will be all about Italian food!

We’re sharing the backstory of “Cooking on a Dime” not just because it’s a whimsical part of our workday, but because it also represents something about content creation and marketing we truly believe in:

When your team has a good idea, even if it’s not directly related to sales, and especially if it’s fun and offbeat, that is content gold.

Showing the people behind the scenes of your brand as quirky, real humans with senses of humor is cool and builds familiarity and trust with your followers. Let them be their silly selves and make time to play, and you’ll have authentic content that entertains and delights your customers.

“Cooking on a Dime” is also evidence that, here at Dish Works, we take the work we do very seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We genuinely like working with each other, and that results in open communication and an efficient process which yields high-quality content for our clients every day. We do industry-leading work without the pretentiousness of other agencies, and we think that makes us fun to work with, too.
